Widely Tunable Polymer Double Micro-Rings (DMR) Laser

Challenge:

Increase index changes of micro-rings to improve the wavelength tuning range of lasers.

Approach:

Employ both electro-optic and thermo-optic effects in two coupled rings with slightly different diameter to get wide tuning range.

Impact:

Achieved an oscillator tuning across the whole band of the Erbium amplifier (1520-1560 nm) with a side mode suppression > 30 dB and a tuning enhancement of 40 times higher than that of the single ring device.
