Monolithic Integration of Active Materials on Submicron Silicon Devices

Efficient coupling through nano-taper:

  • Size and effective index conversion from submicron high index (e.g. Si) waveguide mode to ~5 micron low index (e.g. polymer) waveguide mode.

  • Coupling enhancement factor measured over 1520-1620nm:
    TE: 7.0 ± 0.4 TM: 8.2 ± 0.5

  • Demonstrated enhancement of particle cross-section due to cavity effect.
