Novel Hybrid Polymer/Sol-Gel Waveguide E-O Modulators

Challenge:

Combine E-O polymers with low-loss hybrid organic/inorganic sol-gel waveguides.

Approach:

  1. Fabricate passive hybrid sol-gel waveguides with good control of refractive index and dimensions matched to optical fibers for low coupling losses.

  2. Introduce adiabatic transition between passive waveguides and active EO polymer regions.

Impact:

Demonstrated hybrid modulators with low loss and respectable VΠ (13 V). Modulation voltage was reduced by lateral confinement and can be significantly further reduced.
