Role of Mentor

The mentor may contribute to a successful mentee/mentor relationship in multiple ways.  The characteristics and actions outlined below should help the mentor to structure a valuable relationship with the mentee.

  • Be responsive to your mentee and meet on a regular basis
  • Ensure a positive, supportive, and professional environment
  • Develop a genuine interest in the mentee and her or his progress
  • Encourage and demonstrate confidence in the mentee
  • Be liberal with constructive feedback
  • Share your own stories, including lessons from both successes and failures
  • Listen well and be respectful
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Exchange CVs and/or résumés
  • Avoid actions, comments, or situations that may be construed as harassment

Mentor/Mentee Relationship

Success for the mentor/mentee in the mentoring program will, in part, depend on appropriately identifying expectations of each participant.  Though the mentor/mentee relationship will likely evolve over time, identifying current expectations will help to increase the likelihood of successful mentor/mentee matches.  The online application is designed to collect information about each participant and elicit the mentor’s and the mentee’s expectations and goals.  CMDITR will use the information provided to optimize the initial mentor/mentee matches.
